Project Goals
- Support Marsh Creek’s land management priorities by removing selected invasive species
- Teach Scouts proper identification and removal techniques to create a repeatable, safe, effective removal system
- Increase volunteer recruitment, raise awareness, and track service hours through DCNR’s system
Scope of Work
Initial focus on invasive species appropriate for volunteer removal, including:
- Hand-pull: Garlic mustard, mile-a-minute
- Tool-assisted: Oriental bittersweet, English ivy, multiflora rose
- Exclude species requiring herbicide treatment (e.g., Autumn olive, Bradford pear)
- All work will be conducted in designated areas using methods approved by park staff
Scout Age & Skill Level Structure
Ages 10–11
- Identification basics
- Hand-pulling invasives
- Bagging and staging material
- Learning about invasive species impact
Ages 12–14
- Advanced identification
- Supervised use of hand pruners
- Recording removal quantities and locations
Ages 15–17
- Tool-assisted removal
- Training younger Scouts
- Assisting with project planning
- Leading outreach efforts
Park Support Requested
- Initial training in invasive identification and removal techniques
- Guidance on priority species and locations, including tool use and safety standards
- Occasional staff presence for new phases or advanced work
Troop Responsibilities
- Provide adult leadership and supervision
- Track volunteer hours and report progress to the park
- Ensure all participants register through the DCNR Volunteer Portal
- Supply gloves and basic tools when possible
- Follow all park safety and environmental guidelines
Long-Term Vision
- Seasonal invasive removal days (spring and fall)
- Educational signage or outreach materials (with park approval)
- A sustainable partnership that benefits Marsh Creek year after year
